The “Black Oyster” finish  (our 60’s Black Oyster Pearl- darker pearl) was first seen on Ludwig drums in the 1960’s (first appeared in the 1960 Ludwig catalog).  However, the finish really did not gain universal popularity until Ringo Starr of the Beatles played his Ludwig drums (covered in “black oyster pearl”) on the Ed Sullivan show on February 9, 1964.  For some time, this finish has been offered by some, but with a 5% shrinkage factor- not a good thing to have.  Now, for the first time (to our knowledge) we offer this finish in non-shrinking material (a much more stable product) for re-wrapping drums.  If you want this vintage 60’s look, and not the headaches and discouragement of shrinkage, just give us a call, and you to can have this piece of history on your drums.

Note:
Even today, some suppliers sell finishes that shrink- ask before you buy- there are several problems associated with this type of product:  splitting, cracking, seams pulling away, etc.

See our History of Drum Wrap to read the history of drum wraps. Then take a look at our pricing information. We also sell drum hardware and other drum making parts.
