Cymbal Arm Attachment (for bass or cocktail drums)
The cymbal arm attachment (on a customer set of vintage white pearl drums) for bass drums was first seen in the drum industry soon after drum sets became popular with Jazz and big band music (around 1920). In the beginning, the cymbal attachment was very basic, attaching to the bass drum hoop- only designed to hold a small cymbal. But after the World War II (late 1940s to early 50s), the more modern tom mount that was incorporated into most drum companies’ kits- a more permanent attachment for a cymbal arm. These type attachments stayed popular for several years– when playing styles were more subdued (the arms stayed in place). But when playing styles got wilder (around 1960 and on), most arms (of this type) often fell when playing. And by the 1970s, the presence of the arm was considered more negative than positive by most drummers. And sometime around the 1970s, drum manufactures stopped including the attachment for just about all drum sets. However, from about 2005 and on, we have seen increased interest in this type of arm. Because one less cymbal stand needs to be transported, and cymbal placement can be closer with the arm than most straight cymbal stands, many are choosing to use this attachment. Also, with the use of a memory lock (which we include with the purchase of an arm sold w/ a mount) the holding power is much greater, resulting in a much reduced chance of falling.
Now, from Jammin Sam, a superior cymbal arm, combined with a superior tom mount (with a greater holding power than the originals), and with a memory lock (added strength to keep the arm from moving) is available– there isn’t a better setup to be found with this style of cymbal mount. Also, this arm (with a straight center shaft) can be effectively used with a cocktail drum– mounted on the side.
